Compare More Than Two Years (or Periods) in One QuickBooks Report

Compare More Than Two Years (or Periods) in One QuickBooks Report

The problem

You want to see three, five, or ten years of Profit and Loss side by side to spot a trend, or compare this quarter against the same quarter across several prior years. QuickBooks lets you add exactly one comparison period, so the multi-year view you need does not exist in a single report.

Why QuickBooks can't do it

The modern "Compare to" dropdown adds a single prior period (Previous year or Previous period) plus change columns. There is no way to stack additional years or arbitrary periods into one report, so a true multi-year comparison means running the report several times and stitching the exports together by hand.

Do it in Google Sheets with Retriever

In Google Sheets you are not limited to one comparison column. Pull each period you want and line them all up in a single view.

  1. Pull the report into Google Sheets

Bring your Profit and Loss (or any report) in with Retriever.

  2. Add each period you want to compare

Pull the same report for each year or period and place them side by side (three years, five, ten) in one sheet.

  3. Add your own change and trend columns

Compute year-over-year change, a growth rate, or a sparkline trend across all the periods, not just one prior column.

  4. Refresh the whole comparison at once

Scheduled refreshes update every period column together, so the multi-year view stays current without rebuilding it.

One report. Every period you need.

Retriever pulls each period into Google Sheets so you can compare as many years as you want (with your own change and trend columns) and refresh them all at once.

Frequently asked questions

How many periods can QuickBooks compare in one report?

One. The "Compare to" option adds a single prior period (previous year or previous period). For more, you would run the report multiple times.

Can I compare the same quarter across several years?

Not in one native report. In Google Sheets you can pull each year's quarter and lay them side by side with your own change columns.

Does this work for the Balance Sheet and other reports too?

Yes. The same approach works for any QuickBooks report you can pull into Sheets, not just Profit and Loss.
