Filter a Balance Sheet by Customer Type in QuickBooks, in Google Sheets

The problem

With the new report format you lose the ability to filter by customer type on the balance sheet... the only way to accomplish seeing mom change by customer parent type is to do a manual calc in excel.

You used to filter the Balance Sheet by customer type, to calculate bonuses, or to see month-over-month change by customer parent type across hundreds of clients. The modern reports removed that filter, and QuickBooks support's own answer was to do a manual calculation in Excel.

Why QuickBooks can't do it

The modern Balance Sheet's filter options no longer include customer type, and there's no way to group or subtotal by a customer's parent type in the report itself.

Do it in Google Sheets with Retriever

If support is already telling you to use Excel, do it in Google Sheets, where it filters, groups, and refreshes on its own.

1. Pull the Balance Sheet with the customer dimension

   Use Retriever to bring the balance sheet by customer into a sheet.

2. Map customers to their type

   Keep a small lookup table of customer → type (or parent), so every customer rolls up to a type.

3. Filter or group by type

   Filter to a customer type, or pivot to subtotal by type, including the month-over-month change you need for bonuses.

4. Refresh across all clients

   Scheduled refreshes keep it current, and you can reuse the same workbook across every QBO instance.
