# How to Create a Balance Sheet by Month in QuickBooks Online

Splitting your Balance Sheet into monthly columns shows the month-end balance of every account across the year, the fastest way to see cash building, receivables growing, or debt being paid down over time.

## Steps

### 1. Open the Balance Sheet report

Go to Reports and, under Business overview, select "Balance Sheet." Set the From/To range to cover the months you want to see, for example the full fiscal year to date.

### 2. Set "Display columns by" to Months

Open the "Display columns by" dropdown and choose Months. QuickBooks replaces the single Total column with one column per month, each showing balances as of that month-end.

### 3. Review the monthly columns

Read across the row for any account to see how its month-end balance changed. Because a Balance Sheet is cumulative, each month reflects the running balance, not just that month's activity.

## FAQ

### Do the monthly columns show activity or balances?

Balances. A Balance Sheet is cumulative, so each monthly column shows the running balance of the account as of that month-end, not just that month's change.

### Can I switch the breakdown to quarters or years?

Yes. The same "Display columns by" dropdown includes Quarters and Years. See the Balance Sheet by Quarter guide for the quarterly view.
